Warpath

Yep, the latest in the DS9 relaunch is out now.

I've wanted to write a review of this since the weekend, but I'm not sure where to begin. Make no mistake, this is a hell of a ride, a solid combination of suspense and action. There are some answers to the questions everyone had after Worlds of Deep Space Nine (especially the Bajor and Dominion stories), but the story is not resolved. A lot of it is setup for what comes next, so as a standalone novel, with the next book a year away, it's somewhat frustrating. But it provides satisfactory (and occasionally surprising) resolutions to questions left unanswered in the Worlds of Deep Space Nine stories, and prepares two big cans of whupass for opening and using on the Federation in upcoming books.

And speaking of Constellations...

And according to editor Marco Palmieri, yes, the resemblance is intentional.

The 40th anniversary adventure is just beginning...

Simonsays.com has unveiled the list of celebratory titles at a special 40th anniversary page. (It's a shame someone typed "anniversay" in the title section of the HTML code, but I'm sure that'll be fixed before long.)

A Vanguard novel by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, a Christopher Pike novel by Margaret Wander Bonanno, a trilogy by David R. George III, Diane Duane's Rihannsu, the Shatnerverse, the Constellations anthology, a good selection of reprints, and of course the Mere Anarchy ebook series. All this and Voyages of Imagination: The Star Trek Fiction Companion by Jeff Ayers.

So there's no new Trek in theatres. There's still plenty to be excited about this year.

Out now, apparently...

I haven't bought my copies of the first two yet, but I understand the following are on sale now.

I'm looking forward to reading String Theory, now that all three volumes are out. Distant Shores was pretty good and I expect good things from this, too. Likewise Progress. I've liked the short stories I've read by Terri so far, though I'm so far behind on SCE that I'm still a long way from reading her earlier SCE novella, Malefictorum.

As for Missing in Action... well, it's no secret I'm not a big fan of New Frontier. I don't like the elementary school humour (the whole Pheytus thing, for one, or the rightly excised 21 bun salute) or the general superhero comic tone. But I used to love PAD's Trek books, so at some point in the near future I'll get around to reading No Limits, After the Fall, and Missing in Action. The multi-author approach of No Limits is certainly promising, though I'm not a fan of many NF characters; the news that PAD jumped the storyline ahead a few years and has shaken things up again for the two latest novels also has me mildly curious.
